Woe is me....

Dammit!!!! OK, so, having had a really great 20-mile ride on Saturday, I was ready for another ride on Monday. I like to take a day off now and then, especially when it means I get to sepnd time with family. But I digress. I start pedalling, feeling good, etc. and then, at the 15-mile mark, I hear something wrong. And I feel it. something mechanical has gone awry with my two-wheeled machine!!!!!

Not one to panic, I put it upside down to decipher the problem - don;t worry, I stepped off the bike first. Much to my happiness, it's not the crank. Cranks are expensive. I hate expensive. I can't afford expensive. But, much to my chagrin, there appears to be something wrong with the wheel. I think the axle may be a little bent. This could just mean I need a new hub. But why not get a whole new wheel??? It would be an upgrade.

Oh well, I'll figure it out in the morning when I wake up.

On a side note, I finished building a measuring jig for the local racing outfit. Thi was a cool little project, and I think it turned out ok. I've also got a nice idea for a clever little box - I think my wife will like it. Yeah, I cleaned up my workshop a bit tonight, which is good, because I have several projects that really NEED to be pushed along. I'd like to get many of them finished this summer. The only problem is they might interfere with my time on the bike. I'll have to watch this one closely!!!!

That being said, I'm tired, and I'm off to bed.

Why "Biking with the Fat Kid"??

OK, so why choose this title for this, my little corner of the universe? Easy. I have never been a small person. It's just not going to happen. It's genetics, and I'm sorta over that. Besides, there's nothing I can do about it. At 30 yrs old, I weighed in at 265 lbs., the same as my 65-yr old father. I led a sedentary lifestyle, watching too much TV, and eating too much junk food. Blood pressure and cholesterol were high. This was not a good combination. So I decided to try and do something about it.

I've always enjoyed biking. So, having finally purchased a decent road bike with the intention of riding more, I purchased an indoor trainer as well, and in January, 2008, I proceeded to start riding in my garage. Beginning at 30 minutes a clip - difficult on a trainer, as you cannot coast - I worked on steadily increasing my time until I was able to go for 60 minutes at roughly 80 rpms. It's taken me 4 months, and I'm finally able to get on some outdoor roadways. I've lost 35 pounds, and I'm ready to get out of the garage to do some serious riding.

Still, at 230, some cycling clothes make me look like a stuffed sausage. And not in a good way, I might add. But, I can still get out and ride, so that's what I'm doing.

And you, readers, are welcome to come along for the ride! I don't where it's going to go. I make no promises. I just hope that it's going to be something enjoyable for all of us.

Dear Reader,

WELCOME to the Fat Kid's blog!

OK, before we get started, there are a few quid pro quos we must get through, so the rules are as thus:
1) This is my blog, not yours. You don't have to agree with it. You don't even have to read it. If you're here, you're here by choice. Got it?
2) I have many hobbies, and you can expect to read about them all here from time to time. Mainly, I'm focusing on biking right now. Yes, that's right: a fat guy in spandex.
3) If you'd like to send me mail that is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, or you just want to talk further about something I post, you are welcome to do so. If you just want to be a pain and say something stupid like , "This blog sucks!", I refer you to rule number one. I didn't write that about your blog, so don't do it to me. Call it courtesy.
4) I am generally a peaceable fellow, but will go on rants and tirades every once in a while. Hey, I'm human. If any of these outbursts offends you, I deeply apologize - please know that unless you are named specifically (which I will try to not do, but may make a mistake) it's probably NOT about you. No offense, but since I'm not sure how many people will read this, and I probably don't know you in real life, then you probably don't impact my life enough to write about. Sorry, that's just the way it is.
5) Wherever this journey takes us, I hope to leave you laughing, smiling, and in all other ways, glad that you stopped by. So, take a minute, read the blog, laugh, cry, buy thet-shirt, see the movie, and eventually, you may get to meet me in person!
